Procession of the Cross

30 March, 2009

On Holy Thursday evening at Holy Friday Matins, the priest and deacons process around the church with the cross. The cross is placed in the center of the church, the body of Christ is affixed to it while the chanter sings “Today he who hung the Earth upon the Waters is hung upon the cross,” and we prostrate ourselves before it. This is the procession from St Nicholas Antiochian Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Syrian Byzantine chant, and the chanter is astounding. In English and Arabic.

(Different translation.)

Today He Who hung the earth upon the waters is hung on the tree.
The King of the Angels is decked with a crown of thorns.
He Who wraps the heavens in clouds is wrapped in the purple of mockery.
He Who freed Adam in the Jordan is slapped on the face.
The Bridegroom of the Church is affixed to the cross with nails.
The Son of the virgin is pierced by a spear.
We worship Thy Passion, O Christ.
We worship Thy Passion, O Christ.
We worship Thy Passion, O Christ.
Show us also Thy glorious resurrection.

That Went Well

29 March, 2009

Considering that I knew about half the music, and had never heard or seen the rest, and managed to get through it all. This was my first Sunday singing, and I need to turn around and pay attention to the communion line. I was the last, because there were a lot of people there, and I didn’t want to leave only two people in the choir. Had I turned around and looked, I would have known it was nearly at an end.

Happy Birthday To Me . . .

I did make it to — and through — Great Vespers last night. There was a slight glitch when we flipped to the second page there was no second page, so no words and we couldn’t even fake it. Oh well. It happens.

We’ll See

28 March, 2009

I was better yesterday, and had planned to go to Presanctified, but around 4 or so, I rapidly started to crash, and decided against it. It’s not quite 4 yet, but I feel well enough to stay on my feet for an hour or so, so I plan to go to Great Vespers.

Nix that if I suddenly crash, like I did yesterday. So far, so good.

Today’s Update

27 March, 2009

I’m better today. There is no polite way to say this so forgive the imagery, but the congestion is breaking up and running out my nose, which is messy and disgusting, but at least I can breathe. I do need more coffee, though.

Unless I feel markedly worse over the course of the day, I will be going to Confession and Presanctified Liturgy tonight. I feel awful for missing Annunciation, and almost as awful for missing choir practice last night.

26 March, 2009

After spending the last two days on the couch groaning (especially yesterday), I still feel awful, but I can sit up, which is a major improvement.

25 March, 2009

Pardon the brevity. I’m extremely ill.

More honorable than the cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim, thou who without stain gavest birth to God the Word, true Theotokos, we magnify thee!
